Why do some people buy so much cod?

Hey Guys,
I'm still pretty new on the Server and was wondering why some people buy so much of this weird Item (cod in a bucket/i don't recall the exact name^^) and even build money making 'shops' for other people so they can get more.

Cod is commonly bought and re-sold! The server has a changing economy which means the price of items go up and down. People may purchase the cod for a cheep price then sell it when the value is higher!

Islands lets you buy your own cod from villagers for emeralds you buy from the shop so you can make money early on. They often even give you almost double to shop price of fish. this is because they can get 200% money potions and make profit off of the rest.
